Monkey Flu, Monkey Color Blindness Is Removed

Monkey Flu, Monkey Color Blindness Is Removed

Boffins infect squirrel monkeys with a modified cold virus to deliver a gene that lets them see in colour

Two monkeys were cured of colour blindness thanks to gene therapy that one day may open the way to treating eye disorders in humans, scientists said on Wednesday.

The revolutionary technique used a cold virus as a Trojan horse to infect cone-shaped cells in the retina, stealthily delivering a gene that provides a pigment which is sensitive to red.

In 20 weeks after the treatment, the two primates began to acquire full colour vision, according to the paper, published by the British journal Nature.

“It was as if they woke up and saw these new colours. The animals unquestionably responded to colours that had been invisible to them.” said Jay Neitz, a professor of ophthalmology at the USbased University of Washington, who led the work.

ONE IN A HUNDRED

Colour blindness is the inability to distinguish between different hues, particularly between red and green. Instead, these colours show up shades of grey, causing problems for simple everyday tasks such as recognising traffic lights.

Red-green colour blindness is the most common and incurable genetic disease. It affects between five and eight per cent of males and one per cent of women, as per various studies.

More than 13 million Indians suffer from the problem of colour blindness, making them unsuitable for a variety of professions.

The experiment was conducted on two squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) Dalton and Sam, who had been colour-blind since birth.
The monkeys were given an adapted form of a standard visiontest to find out exactly which out of 16 hues they failed to see.
When the monkeys traced a colour pattern on a computer touch screen, they were given a reward of grape juice.

HOW THEY DID IT
The researchers inserted a human gene called L-opsin into a disabled cold virus and delivered it to the monkeys’ retina through several injections.

The gene colonised cone cells, the most important vision receptors in mammals, adding the missing light-sensitive pigment.

Colour vision in Sam and Dalton has remained stable more than two years after treatment.
It is the first time that a vision disorder has been corrected in primates in which all photo-receptors are intact and healthy.

“Although colour blindness is only moderately life-altering, we’ve shown we can cure a cone disease in a primate, and that it can be done safely,” said co-researcher William Hauswirth.

“That’s extremely encouraging for the development of therapies for human cone diseases that really are blinding,” he added.

The researchers believe this technique could be useful in correcting a variety of known vision disorders. “People who are colour blind often feel that they are missing out. If we could find a way to do this in humans, there would be a lot of people who would want it.” said Professor Neitz.

Gene therapy holds the promise of blocking or reversing inherited diseases. Targeting cone cells could cure common types of blindness such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy

Google Fast Flip - Read Online Stories, Magazines, News

Google Fast Flip - Read Online Stories, Magazines

Google unveiled an experimental news reader called “Fast Flip” at a conference held on Monday. Fast Flip is supposed to make reading online stories as easy as flipping through a magazine, readers can sort through content based on topics, favourite writers and publications. For now, Fast Flip will only show the first page of a story. Readers who want to continue will have to click through to the publisher’s site, where the display reverts to a traditional Web page.

More than three dozen publishers, broadcasters and Web-only outlets have agreed to share their content. Unlike Google’s main search page and its news section, publishers providing stories to Fast Flip will get most of the revenue from the ads.

Fast Flip is the latest step that Google has taken to improve its relations with publishers, who have railed against the company for profiting from their articles without sharing the wealth.

Google should be able to show lot more ads, with most of the money going to publishers, said Krishna Bharat, the inventor of the search engine’s news section.

Monopolycitystreets.com, Use Google Map To Buy And Develop Millions Of Streets Worldwide

Monopolycitystreets.com, Use Google Map To Buy And Develop Millions Of Streets Worldwide

Over 1.7 million players logged in to the Monopoly City Streets Web site on the opening day, rendering the site unusable and slow to all but the most dogged users, who tried to grab the best streets in their bid to become virtual property tycoons.

The free game, available online at monopolycitystreets.com, uses Google Maps as a limitless extension of the board game, allowing players to buy and develop millions of streets worldwide. Toy company Hasbro, which owns the rights to the title, launched Monopoly Streets on at 11:30 PM, Wednesday, and was hammered by incoming traffic.

“We anticipated an opening rush when we launched the game, but the first few hours have surpassed even our greatest expectations,” the developers wrote on the site’s blog.

The game appears to have a large following in India too. Mumbai city’s skyline is already dotted with virtual skyscrapers, power plants, and hotels, the best streets are already taken just 36 hours since its launch.

Mahapalika Marg, P Dmello Road, Marine lines, and Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, all have owners, with asking prices for these streets over a million in monopoly money. “I just logged in and all prime property in Mumbai is bought out! Just like in real life,” said Jaison Lewis, our resident game-reviewer. “Even Palm Beach road in Navi Mumbai is taken.” he added. The rules are almost the same as the traditional board game; each player is given $3 million in monopoly money on registering, which he can use to build his virtual empire, by buying streets, and then build on the plot to earn extra rent and increase their fortune. “It’s a chance to escape the harsh reality of recession and enjoy building up an empire,” the Sun quoted Hasbro as saying.

The online version also lets players build skyscrapers, football stadiums, and other buildings as well as the usual houses and hotels. And the ‘Chance’ cards give players the chance to ruin rivals by building prisons, rubbish dumps and sewage works on their streets.

Rent is paid automatically each day, from $50,000 for a house to $100 million for a skyscraper.
Launched in 1935, Monopoly is the world’s most popular board game, with over 250 million boards sold worldwide in 37 languages. Hasbro launched the website to promote their new 3D Monopoly City game, but it looks like the Web site might turn out to have a larger fan following than the 3D counterpart.
